The McColl Center Artists-in-Residence
North Carolina
2014
While at the McColl Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, I exhibited a revised version of Covert Issues. Covert Issues borrows its name from Al Sharpton who, in the wake of the murder of Sean Bell, acknowledged that race is a “covert” issue in police shootings of unarmed men of color. For over a decade, I have been tracking similar deaths of unarmed or lesser-armed civilians by police officers and have constructed an archive of these deaths in an effort to use visual art to raise awareness and open a dialog about the militarization of our police forces, the surveillance apparatus of the State, and the fatal effects of racial profiling on targeted communities.
Additionally, I exhibited Myth of the Monolith, large scale, color portraits of Black subjects taken with a macro lens. These portraits serve to highlight the physiognomic diversity within the community.
